Free
Hit Counter code must be installed within the code
of each webpage to be tracked!
Here's
how:
Your
free hit counter code comes ready to install with
no modifications. If you ordered the Deluxe upgrade
there is an added step and those instructions come
with the upgrade. The recommended method for installing
the hit counter code is to use a text-file editor
like Notepad, but free hit counters' code may be
installed with just about any method you might be
using. You may refer to our installation support
page for troubleshooting resources including specific
tips for most of the common webpage editing programs.
These instructions hope to assist users of all experience
levels, so if we are describing something rather
simple to you, sorry about that! We all started
at some point! If you have any suggestions for these
instructions, please
share them with us, so that we may improve our
support.
Installation
with Notepad:
1)Be sure to have a backup copy of the page in a
safe place on your computer; if everything explodes
you can always revert!
2)Open the local copy of the .html page to be edited
using notepad.
You may do this by drilling down to the file, right
click on it, select open with Notepad. Or you may
open the page using explorer, right click, select
view source. Or you may open notepad, select file,
open, drill down to the folder, select web page.
If you can't see the file, be sure to drill down
after selecting "files of all types".
That way notepad will let you see all file types,
not just .txt files.
3)You should now be looking at your webpage's code
in Notepad.
4)Find the "body" of your webpag; every
.html document has the following tags:
<html>
<head>
<title> </title>
</head>
<body>
free hit counter code must
go in between these tags!
</body>
</html>
5)Insert your free-hc code just before the closing
body tag:
*paste free-hc code here*
</body>
here's
how to copy and paste: highlight all the lines of
the code with your mouse by clicking and dragging
your mouse cursor over the text of the code (make
sure to highlight only the code, and nothing else).
Once you've highlighted the code, right click, select
copy, click into your source code---coderight here</body>,
right click, select paste. Inspect your work, SAVE.
Go to each page to be tracked and repeat this process.
6)Save the file after inserting code
7)Upload
the page to your website host via ftp- or if hosting
locally, load the new file into the appropriate
folder to publish.
8)Test
your code: Go to the live webpage you updated, then
go login at free-hit-counters.com to see site traffic
stats. There should be at least one visitor recorded
(you!)
Installation
for Online based Websites
If you make changes to your pages through an online
interface (ie. MySiteInc.com free web sites), instead
of opening your notepade or HTML editor, the goal
is exactly the same, but must be done using the
interface provided by your account. There are many
of these services, so we have no specific details.
All else is the same, however, and please note below
suggestion for where code is to be installed (same
as above)
Your webpage code:
<html>
<head>
<title> </title>
</head>
<body>
free hit counter code must
go in between these tags!
</body>
</html>
Insert your free-hc code just before the closing
body tag:
*paste free-hc code here*
</body>
here's
how to copy and paste: highlight all the lines of
the code with your mouse by clicking and dragging
your mouse cursor over the text of the code (make
sure to highlight only the code, and nothing else).
Once you've highlighted the code, right click, select
copy, click into your source code---coderight here</body>,
right click, select paste. Inspect your work, SAVE.
Go to each page to be tracked and repeat this process.
Installation
using HTML Editors (like Dreamweaver, Frontpage,
etc)
Same basic steps as listed above using notepad.
Must find the option to edit or add code, then insert
the free hit counter code. Some of these programs
may automatically reformat the hit counter code
and cause errors. Please see
our instructions for specific html editor programs.
Go to Installation support
for troubleshooting.
Go to Instructions for specific
editing programs.
